Welcome to NAMI -
Virginia Beach, Virginia
It is said mental illness are more common than the common
cold. In fact, one in five families is affected by a serious
mental illness. You may have a mental illness yourself, or
perhaps a member of your family is being treated for a
psychiatric disorder. You may know mental illness through a
neighbor, a friend, or a colleague at work.
Decades ago, medical science established that serious mental
illnesses are biologically based disorders of the brain, and
that they are highly treatable. In many ways, having a brain
disorder is no different from having diabetes, heart disease,
or any other physical illness.
Unfortunately, stigma, apathy, misinformation and outright
discrimination prevent people from understanding mental
illnesses. As a consequence, too many individuals and their
families are unable to receive the medical care and support
services they need.
Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Virginia Beach Chapter
is dedicated to increasing public
understanding of mental illness to reduce stigma; to improve
the quality of life for individuals diagnosed with serious
mental illness; to provide support and education to families
of the mentally ill and to persons with mental illness; and to
promote research.
In Virginia each year, over 394,000 adults and at least 86,000
children experience the disabling symptoms of serious mental
illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major
depression, severe anxiety disorders, attention deficit
disorders, and more. Less than 12% are currently receiving any
kind of help from the public mental health system.
