What is Mental Illness?
Mental illness is more common than the common cold. It is more common than cancer, diabetes, heart disease or arthritis yet it remains the most misunderstood of all illnesses.
Serious and persistent mental illnesses are biochemically-based brain disorders that can affect a person’s ability to think, to feel and to relate to other people and his/her surroundings.
Children can be affected by childhood brain disorders such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, pervasive developmental disorder and Tourette’s syndrome. Both children and adults can be affected by the following serious mental illnesses:
- Bipolar
- Dual Diagnosis
- Major Depression
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Panic Disorder
- Schizophrenia
The good news is that mental illnesses are treatable. The challenges include:
- Removing the stigma of mental illness
- Availing support to those who suffer from mental illness and their families
