It is said mental illness are more common than the common
cold. In fact, one in five families is affected by a serious
mental illness. You may have a mental illness yourself, or
perhaps a member of your family is being treated for a
psychiatric disorder. You may know mental illness through a
neighbor, a friend, or a colleague at work.
The Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Virginia Beach Chapter
is dedicated to increasing public
understanding of mental illness to reduce stigma; to improve
the quality of life for individuals diagnosed with serious
mental illness; to provide support and education to families
of the mentally ill and to persons with mental illness; and to
promote research.

NAMI has two classes of membership: Affiliate and
National Associate.
Affiliate members are consumers (patients) and their
families and friends. Affiliate members belong to all three
levels of the organization (local affiliate, state
organization, and national) and are eligible to vote in NAMI
elections. Join NAMI at the local-affiliate level if you wish
to participate in local and state activities. Joining at the
local level automatically makes you a NAMI member at all three
levels.
National Associate members are others who share NAMI's
mission of empowering and uniting everyone affected by serious
mental illness to improve their lives and advocate for better
treatments and services. NAMI National Associate members
belong to NAMI only at the national level.
